Mudras
A relatively simple and yet unique way to enhance your Yoga practice
According to the book, Asana, Pranayama, Mudra, Banda by Swami Satyananda Saraswati, “Mudras can be described as psychic, emotional, devotional and aesthetic gestures or attitudes, intended to link the individual pranic forces with the universal or cosmic force.”
The Sanskrit word Mudra can be broken down into two parts, Mud, meaning delight, pleasure or enchantment, and Dru, meaning to draw forth, so ultimately Mudras are meant to invoke our own inherent delight that is always within and waiting to be awakened.
Each finger and the thumb are said to represent the elements of the Universe, so when we connect them in different configurations, we are said to be balancing the different elements that are within and all around.
What are they?
Mudras are positions or gestures of not only the hands, but also the face and body, that are said to support our physical health, emotional balance and spiritual awakening.
